Usain Bolt currently holds three Olympic records: the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, and the 4x100 meter relay. He is one of the fastest men to have ever run in the Olympics. He was the 1st man to medal three times in the 100-meter dash, and the 1st man to win the 100-meter dash 3 times consecutively: 2008 Beijing, 2012 London & 2016 Rio de Janeiro. Below is information about some of his wins.

Osleidys Menéndez Sáez of Cuba set the World Record for the women’s javelin throw in the 2005 World Athletic Championships, beating her own personal record at the same time. Though her record was broken in 2008 by Barbora Špotáková from the Czech Republic, Menéndez Sáez still holds the record for the North America, Central America, and Caribbean region women’s javelin throw.

Use the chart below to answer the following questions:

BONUS:

The 4th grade wants to put on a “4th Grade Olympics” competition and see how close they can get to the current world records.

  1. In a long jump event, Alex jumped 2/5 of the distance of the current record. If the current record is 8.95 meters, how far did Alex jump?

  2. In the javelin throw event, Ashley threw the javelin 1/4 of the current record distance. If the record is 72 meters, how far did Ashley throw?

  3. In the 200-meter dash, it took Sean 3 times as long to complete the race as it did Usain Bolt (2008 Olympics). How long did it take Sean to run 200 meters, rounded to the nearest second?
