Railroad Team 3
Your team gets to represent the Central Pacific Railroad, the company that covered the hardest section of track to be built. They laid far fewer miles than the Union Pacific, because they had to blast through mountains and wind through canyons. They also had the crew that laid the most track in a single day (ask someone from Team 1 about the 10 Mile Day). To represent these workers, you will show how much track they laid and some of the supplies they needed to do it. In order to honor the workers’ diverse heritage, you will need to use both the U.S. Standard and the Metric Systems. Round all your answers to the nearest WHOLE NUMBER.
-
The Central Pacific Railroad laid 690 miles of track. How far is that in kilometers?
-
The workers laid about 3,250 ties per mile of track. About how many ties did they lay total?
-
The Central Pacific workers had the choice of buying their ties in orders of 200, 400 or 500. Which order should they choose to have the least number of ties left over at the end?
-
How many orders of the given size would they need? (Ex: If you chose 200 ties, how many orders of 200 would they need to complete the whole track?)
-
-
If they used the same number of spikes per tie on an 11-mile section of track and used 214,500 spikes, how many spikes per tie did they use?
-
Represent the above information in a creative way, like an infographic, poster or chart.
