Tall Tales Team 3

The legend of Johnny Appleseed is based on a real person: John Chapman. Most people didn’t know his last name, so they gave him the nickname “Johnny Appleseed”. Johnny Chapman Appleseed wandered Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, planting apple seeds as he went. He got them from the cider mills that used apples, but not their seeds. He walked barefoot, with a pot on his head for a hat.

He preferred the company of animals to people, though he did see people frequently to teach them how to take care of apple trees. He was happiest with his old horse Jim and a lame wolf that he saved from a trap.

He died outdoors, with his horse and his wolf. It is said that his spirit went up into the sky, but that at times he still can be seen in the apple groves, helping the trees to grow.
