     Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind was the youngest of 10 children, and the only girl. She could walk, talk and run from the day she was born. Her nine older brothers challenged her to race after race, and she beat them all. When she grew older, she decided to go live in the woods with the animals. She listened to them and learned from them. Nothing could scare her.

     One day a bear walked into her cabin, ready to eat her. With a big smile, she asked the bear to dance. The two square danced song after song. She even tied a string from the bear’s ankle to her butter churn, so she could dance and churn her butter at the same time. Another time, she went out into the woods and the giant panther “Fireeyes” thought she looked pretty tasty. He pounced, but she fought back. They fought all day and all night. At one point, she rode on his back as he tried to buck her off. At another, he was on her back. After fighting for a whole day, they were both getting pretty tired. They called it a tie and became friends. Fireeyes helped Sally plow her garden, using his big claws. And she kept him warm at night by the fire.

     Legend has it that she saved Davy Crockett’s life one day. He had stopped to rest in a tree, but his head got stuck. She heard him hooping and hollering and went to see what was going on. Quickly, she made up her lasso of rattlesnakes, threw it up onto the tree branch and pulled it back with ease. Davy Crockett fell out of the tree and loved Sally Ann since then. The two got married, and her already long name got a little longer. But I don’t think she minded. After all, she was Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind Crockett.

  1. Miss Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind’s lasso was made out of rattlesnakes. Full grown, rattlesnakes can be 8 feet long. If her lasso was 96 feet long, how many rattlesnakes was she using?

  2. Sally learned about preparing for the winter from her animal friends. One winter she helped the squirrels store nuts to eat during the winter. If each tree held 578 acorns and there were 27 trees that were used for storage, how many acorns did they store total?

  3. One summer, Sally Ann rode a whirlwind to visit her friends. She stopped for the night after she had traveled 1,489 miles. The next day, she traveled another 2,346 miles. How many miles did she travel total?

  4. One of Sally Ann’s favorite things to eat for breakfast were eagle egg omelets. She normally ate about 250 eggs per month. If she had already eaten 127, how many eggs did she have left for the rest of the month?

  5. Sally Ann churned her own butter. And she made a lot of it too! She needed 1,280 ounces of cream to churn her butter for the month. If she already had 64 ounces of cream, how many more ounces did she need?

  6. During her legendary fight with Fireeyes the Panther, Sally Ann threw him 1,000 feet up into the air. If she caught sight of him again 200 feet before he hit the ground, how far had he fallen already?

  7. It took Sally Ann 4,848 hours to plow her garden every month. With the help of Fireeyes, she could do it 16 times faster! How many hours did it take her with Fireeyes’ help?

  8. Sally Ann was born in 1789. She married Davy Crockett in 1819. How old was she when they got married?

  9. At weddings in Sally Ann’s town, there were normally about 1,020 pies. However, because it was her and Davy Crockett’s wedding, the guests were a bit larger than usual (Paul Bunyan and his ox Babe, for example). They needed 38 times more pies for their wedding. How many pies did they need?
