Help Page: Fossils, Team 1

Team 1

  1. Color coded map:

    1. Try sorting the counties into four groups.

    2. The groups might be (1) NO FOSSILS; (2) 0-6 fossils; (3) 7-20 fossils; (4) 21-45 fossils.

    3. Provide the scale with labels (blue to red, 0 to 42)

  2. Charts:

    1. What chart would you use to show the number of people in your class that liked dogs vs. cats vs. fish?

    2. Think about the number of fossils being the WHOLE. How could you show the way that WHOLE is split up?

  3. Fractions & decimals:

    1. The DENOMINATOR of a fraction is the total number. In this case, it would be the total number of fossils found in Utah.

    2. The NUMERATOR of a fraction is the parts of the whole number that are found in a specific place or group.

    3. The denominator for these fossil fractions is 170, because there were 170 fossils listed in the database.

    4. The numerator for these fossil fractions will be the number of fossils found in that specific county.

  4. Infographic: The purpose of an infographic is for people to see and understand information quickly.

    1. What visual elements can you include that are easy to understand?

    2. Pick the chart that makes the most sense to you.

    3. Use moderate colors, not too bright. Pick 2 or 3 and stick to those.
